Fried Vegetarian Daikon Radish Balls 萝卜丸子

Let’s talk about daikon radishes! Daikon radishes (萝卜) are white radishes often used in Chinese cooking. They can be eaten raw, but are also often cooked into dishes. You might have heard of it being used in turnip cake, but today I wanted to introduce you to a new way of eating them — deep frying them to make fried vegetarian daikon radish balls!

It helps that the local Asian supermarket near me has a recurring sale on daikon radishes! I am able to get about 20 daikon radishes for about $7, which is an incredible deal!

This recipe is adapted from my dad, who grew up on a farm in the rural countryside in China. Although did not readily have access to meat, they did have access to a lot of daikon radishes. Daikon radish meatballs 萝卜丸子 was their yummy (and deep fried) substitute for meatballs.

By the way, this might now be my favorite way of eating daikon radishes now. Also, look at how cute the daikon radishes are!

How to make fried vegetarian daikon radish balls 萝卜丸子

Wash and peel the daikon radishes. Shred the daikon radishes with a grater or a food processor and squish out as much water as you can with your hands.

Place the shredded daikon radishes into a bowl and add in the spices and seasonings and mix well.

Afterwards, add in the flour and cornstarch into the mixture and mix thoroughly. Form the daikon radish and flour mixture into balls, about 1 in in diameter. Deep fry the daikon radish balls for 10 minutes at 350°F. Take out and serve! They should be crunchy on the outside and soft and savory on the inside.

Ingredients

  • 3 daikon radish (shredded)
  • 3 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 4 cups oil for frying such as peanut, canola, etc.

Instructions

  • Wash and peel the daikon radishes.
  • Shred the daikon radishes with a grater or a food processor and squish out as much water as you can with your hands.
  • Place the shredded daikon radishes into a bowl and add in the spices and seasoning: salt, white pepper, garlic powder, black pepper, sesame oil, and 3 eggs. Mix well.
  • Then add in the flour and cornstarch into the mixture and mix thoroughly.
  • Form the daikon radish and flour mixture into balls, about 1 in in diameter. Deep fry the daikon radish balls for 10 minutes at 350°F, until golden brown.

    Great way to use fresh daikon straight from the garden! I found the recipe to be a little bland as written, so I added a chopped scallion/green onion to the second half. Delicious! I served with a little soy-based dipping sauce.
